LETTER FROM PASTOR JEFF FOR OUR TIME CAPSULE

Dear Future Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church,

“Unless the Lord builds the house, its workers labor in vain.” -Psalm 127:1

It is November 7th, 2021, on a Sunday morning before church on our 75th Anniversary. As I sit down to write this letter, I am overwhelmed by thankfulness for what God has done, is doing, and what I am confident he will continue to do through the ministries of this little church on the corner of Hawthorne and Kenilworth. Even though I have only been on staff here for 10 and-a-half years, I know many of the stories of this church’s history and I know, that even in the hardest of times, God has walked alongside us the whole way. His faithfulness is so evident in the stories of this church.

I am not sure what your today looks like, dear church, but in our today the world has become a very divided place. During the pandemic people have been isolated and unable to gather in ways we have always been accustomed to. This isolation has taken a toll on our society. Our little church has done its best to continue to gather in the ways that we can, but it has not been without difficulty. It is a polarizing time. Sadly, our culture defines people by their political views rather than seeing the other as a child of God. It is a time when even Christians more readily share their political opinion than share the gospel; a time when even Christians more readily read and trust a random blog post than read and trust the Bible. Our church is not immune to these temptations, but we strive together to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. As we began this 75th year, the planning committee found a little journal from the 1st year of the church. Within this little journal was the petition, “We ask for prayers that God will lead us and guide us, and that we may never for one instant take our eyes from His lovely face.” We continue to pray this, and we continue to seek his face.

Throughout this trying season, our church has been focused on three things that we hope will keep our eyes fixed on Jesus as we ask him to build this house. We are committed to Scripture, Prayer, and Fellowship. We believe that these three things drive us into mission together for the gospel! As we seek the face of Christ, we believe that he will transform us through his spirit to do God’s work our world. My desire is for our church to be a place where people come to understand and experience the depth of love that the cross speaks over us, and the hope that we have in the resurrected Jesus. Our monthly potlucks have become a place where we extend the table fellowship of the Lord’s Supper and spur one another on toward love and good deeds. And we continue to pray… we are a praying church. We seek the Lord’s wisdom in all we do, and our prayer has been that he would establish the work of our hands.  We ask him over and over again that he would keep our eyes fixed on Him and keep our hands to the plow.

I am so thankful that God has allowed me to shepherd this flock at this time. I will continue to be thankful and serve here for as long as He allows me to be a part of His work here at Glen Ellyn Covenant. If you are reading this, I implore you: continue to call the church back to faithfulness to the scriptures, repentance of sin, proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the gathering of the church, and commitment to seeing Christ’s kingdom come on earth.

May we never take our eyes from his lovely face.

Grace and peace to you,

Pastor Jeff

OCTOBER IS PASTOR APPRECIATION MONTH

Did you know that October is Pastor Appreciation Month?  Some suspect that it is a holiday that that was established by Hallmark, but in actuality the celebration began in 1992 as “Clergy Appreciation Month” with a mission of uplifting and encouraging pastors, missionaries and religious workers.  We are privileged to have a wonderful pastor and a faithful staff.  We are thankful for the leadership that Pastor Jeff provides and for the beautiful ministry of the entire staff… both those who have been with us for some time and those who have recently joined the staff.  Please take a few moments over the coming days to express your appreciation to Pastor Jeff, and to Jori, and to our staff.  I was recently struck by the words of leadership guru Peter Drucker who said, “Over the years I have made a career out of studying the most challenging management roles out there. After all of that I am now convinced the two most difficult jobs in the world are these—one, to be President of the United States, and two, to be the leader of a church.”  Pastor Jeff, thank you for answering God’s call!

ALL SAINTS DAY

Our All Saints Day Gallery is up in the North Alcove, on display for the Anniversary Celebration and a few weeks in November.

CHOIR

Choirs have a wonderful history at Glen Ellyn Covenant Church.  We are forming a choir to help lead music in worship on Sunday, November 7th.  Rehearsals for this will be held after worship – the Sunday School hour – on Sundays, October 24 and 31. We will meet in the sanctuary and sit somewhat distanced from one another.

Dear GCOV Family and Friends,

After much prayer and discernment, the 75th anniversary committee has decided to postpone our November 6th dinner celebration. At the heart of the decision was a desire to have our whole church family present, which we knew would not happen under current circumstances. While we know it is impossible to put on an event with 100% participation, we would still like to have as many as possible of those who desire to be there. At the RSVP cut off, we had less than half our members and regular attenders tell us they would be present. We also had requests from long-time members that we postpone. While we know this is disappointing for us, we ask that you do four things:

1.      Please pray. Pray that our church continues (as it has for 75 years) to follow Jesus no matter the cost. That we would not, for even one second, turn our eyes away from his beautiful face or our ears from God’s Word.

2.      Please bear patiently with us as we all journey together during a time of constant change and moments of disappointment. As Christians, our love of Christ is proven in our response to various circumstances.

3.      Come to church on Sunday, November 7th! We are still celebrating our church’s 75th anniversary on this Sunday. We will have a guest preacher from our past, we will have an extended coffee time and food outside (rain or shine), and we will bury a time capsule on the church property to remind a future generations at GEECC of God’s faithfulness!

4.      Get super excited for when we do have our celebration dinner in the Spring or next Fall!

AN INVITATION TO RESPOND USING ALL WORSHIP ARTS

In anticipation of our 75th anniversary celebration, we artists need to have a response to God's faithfulness yesterday, now and forever...[the theme].  Since some of our founders were artists themselves, we stand on very strong shoulders. We have a responsibility to carry on our mission as artists in the church to proclaim God's Glory and His marvelous works as well as what the Holy Spirit is proclaiming through us using our gifts in the arts.

As a way of providing inspiration, we will look to Psalm 75.  It is only 10 verses and covers a multitude of topics.  Please meditate on it. If you only want to focus on the first couple of verses, that is good as well.  Let the Holy Spirit inspire you to respond to God's word in Psalm 75.   For the visual artists, please work as large as you are able, since our gallery is in the sanctuary for this celebration.  I would like to begin hanging your artwork in October, or before.  All work of "Living in the Resurrection" will be taken down in October.  Thank you all for your participation and your willingness to allow your work to be displayed throughout these long months of the pandemic.  They were wonderfully hopeful and healing!

We also have thought of the hymn "Now Thank We All Our God" as a theme song that was written from Psalm 75.  You may use that as well for inspiration. All of the arts are welcome; dance, poetry, visual, music etc.  Let your imagination soar!

Thank you for considering participating in this all congregation celebration!  Your work adds to the whole response and we will all be blessed by your gift!
