Urbana Student Missions Conference

The Urbana Missions Conference, sponsored by Intervarsity Christian Fellowship and held once every three years, is happening in Indianapolis Dec. 28 ̶ 31. “The Urbana Student Missions Conference is a milestone moment. It’s a sacred space for vibrant, multicultural worship, dynamic Bible teachings, and eye-opening testimonies from the global Church. It’s a space for whole-life, whole-world discipleship — discovering how God is calling us to use our gifts and passions in his global mission.” Several of the missionaries that we have supported attended the conference in years past and confirmed their call there.

GEECC has funds available that could support GEECC college students interested in attending. Are you developing a passion for missions or ministry? The conference is “. . . a space to discover, discern, and decide your next steps in joining God’s global mission” (https://urbana.org/conference). Contact Pastor Jeff or Darren Miller (missions@gecovenant.org) soon as registration by Nov. 30 allows discounted housing rates.

Look! See What God’s doing- Children’s Ministry Weekly Church Update

Father and Son Dodgeball night!

This week we started our midweek gathering for our children’s ministry. The dads and boys (k-5) got together for a night of dodgeball and devotion. It was a blast!

This is the beginning of our efforts to build a midweek program for our children’s ministry. After many planning meetings and conversations, we’ve decided to take a “softer” approach to our midweek programming. Sparked Vision, rolled out in 2021 to be the vision and structure of our midweek program, is still the direction we’re headed to provide a meaningful midweek service for our kids and be an outreach tool for the community. However, in effort to build community first, we’re going to begin by providing more relaxed opportunities for families to gather so that people inside and outside of our church can connect with one another.

How we’ve decided to do this is by offering twice a month a night for Dads and Boys to gather and Moms and Girls to gather to play. The Moms and Girls group is still in the works with plans to launch early next year.

If you’re a guy, we’re inviting you to come join us! Come gather with other guys and boys every other Tuesday.

 Tell your friends!

Next meeting: Tuesday November 15, 2022 6:00PM-7:30PM in the Gym.

See you there!

75th anniversary Luncheon RSVP!

In 1946 a small group of families heard God's call to plant a church on the corner of Kenilworth and Hawthorne in Glen Ellyn Illinois. Three quarters of a century later, that church stands, much changed in appearance and size but not at all in purpose--to know Christ Jesus and to make Him known. This year we are privileged to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Glen Ellyn Evangelical Church by recognizing and proclaiming God's faithfulness in the past, the present, and the future.

In addition to celebrating God's faithfulness in our worship service, you are invited to join us for a catered Italian luncheon in Pollack Hall immediately following. There will be a hearty menu with some options for those who are gluten-free and for kids, too. In addition, there will be cookbooks made by members of the church for purchase! Jesus- Yesterday, Today and Forever

"The 3 banners in the front of the sanctuary, represent the theme of our 75th Anniversary celebration, "Jesus--the same yesterday, today and forever."  The first banner is a depiction of Glen Ellyn Covenant's original building including the cornerstone, depicting yesterday. The second banner is today's present building, and the third is forever in the "new Jerusalem."

Concluding our Glen Ellyn Food Pantry feature this month we will receive the Love Offering this coming Sunday, Oct. 30, for the Pantry. If you are inclined to help in other ways, the Pantry would love to have more volunteers to work with clients and help with other activities.

 Partnership Impact, Partner Gratitude

The Missions Team continues enjoying reading newsletters from our partners and is also now receiving and reviewing Annual Missionary Partner Updates. Two examples of partnership impact and partner gratitude are:

Covenant World Relief & Development

Peter and Anna

This couple, serving in Taiwan, had this to say about our partnership: “We have been friends and partners with GEECC for a long time and have been blessed in so many ways. When our daughter had surgery, there was help and prayers; when we needed things, GEECC helped to find them. When we visited, we felt cared for and invited. Thank you! Please keep doing these things as missionaries are deeply touched and strengthened in spirit by your prayers and actions.”

MAKERSPACE CREATIVE PRAYER

The Maker’s Space grew out of our congregation of GEECC in 2013, and is going into our 9th year of meetings of many different people. It is a place where we welcome creativity in our lives and introduce our creative Creator to our friends in our community. It is a safe place where you and your friends will feel welcomed. This year’s sessions will focus on Creative Prayer, using art to have a conversation with God. Having a conversation with a friend requires listening as well as talking, and we will be using art as a tool in the conversation process, especially when there are no words to describe our emotions. We will explore different kinds of prayer using different art mediums.

The October session of The Maker's Space will have a time of creating and listening to what's on your heart and hearing what is on the heart of God. We will explore two kinds of prayer, lament and praise and water based painting with pen and ink mediums. The importance is on the process not necessarily on the end product, although the art continues to speak long after the session is over. Come and explore how the arts can be a way to come out of the busyness of life and to hear purpose and validation of how much the Creator loves you.

Mark your calendars and invite your friends to the following sessions;

Oct. 9 Lament and praise

Nov. 13 Forgiveness and Thanksgiving

Jan. 15 Guest Artist Alison Tisdale Régnier “Paint your Heart Out”

All sessions are Sunday, 5-7pm in Munson Hall

EMBRACING HOPE DURING ANXIOUS TIMES

The world is full of anxiety, fear, frustration, and confusion today. At every turn it seems we encounter political polarization, social division, racial tensions, and non-stop crises. It’s no wonder many are confused about how to live faithfully without contributing to the culture wars or disengaging altogether.

How do we, as disciples of Jesus Christ, find peace and enjoy a flourishing life where we keep in step with the Spirit? How do we embrace hope in a world that often appears hopeless? Join us for an important evening in which Stuart McAllister will take a serious look at today’s concerns and point to the hope we can have despite our anxieties. There will be a period for question and response with Stuart as we seek to chart a way forward in these disorienting times.

Registration is FREE. Click here to register!

Our Speaker: Since Stuart McAllister's conversion in 1977, he has traveled the globe proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ, first smuggling Bibles and Christian resources to churches behind the Iron Curtain. For nearly forty-five years, Stuart’s regularly spoken to students, business professionals, and government leaders. He’s contributed chapters to several books and most recently co-authored Faith that Lasts: A Father and Son on Cultivating Lifelong Belief with his son, Cameron. He and his wife, Mary, live in the Atlanta suburbs.

Look! See What God’s doing- Children's Ministries Weekly Church Update

My wife pretty regularly volunteers in the nursery.  I volunteer for a few things now and again, but the nursery is not something for which, left to my own devices, I would typically volunteer.

But then Jen Casey asked if couples would be willing to volunteer for nursery duty.  Hmmm.  Why not?  I’ve got kids and grandkids.  I love babies and toddlers.

It was great.  Not just because of the 7 babies and toddlers for whom we cared during the service (although the kids were great too).  But what a wonderful opportunity for my wife and I to connect with some young parents.  Intergenerational at its best!

Some parents we knew well, but connected in a new way.  Some we knew a bit, and got to know a little better.  Some were new to our church.  One mom was on her first visit and we were able to welcome her in a way we couldn’t have in the sanctuary. Another mom was going to drop off her child, but a bit of separation anxiety kept mom in the nursery and we had a chance to chat and get to know her better.  For another set of parents it was the first time leaving their baby in the nursery (baby was ok; parents a bit nervous).  A middle schooler from our church had also volunteered to help.  What a cool thing, and it was fun getting to know him a bit too.

I went in with, “Yeah, why not?”  I came out with, “That was so cool!!!”

 Thanks for all you do!

Take care,

Jay

Food Drive

This week our church and the Ark Preschool are conducting a food drive for the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry. Grocery collection bags are in the church atrium along with a list of top needs and envelopes for monetary donations. Top needs are also listed on the Pantry’s website. Ark families’ donations will be collected this Friday, Oct 7 and others’ donations will be collected this Sun., Oct. 9.

We anticipate engaging in a related youth service project later this month. More details will follow.

 Food Pantry Volunteers Needed

The Pantry would love to have a few more regular volunteers from our church join its amazing team to work with clients. The “work” is rewarding and hours flexible. Shifts are Mon. – Thurs. 11:30 am – 3:30 pm.  The Food Pantry is also looking for volunteers willing to work as substitutes, occasionally helping with:

  • Food Recovery Pick-Ups: Drive your own vehicle to local grocery stores to pick-up daily donations and deliver to the Pantry.

  • Food Stocking: Sort food donations and restock shelves.

If interested, please contact the Missions Committee at missions@gecovenant.org.

75th Anniversary RSVP!

OUR 75TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION IS OCTOBER 30TH!
