MAKERSPACE CREATIVE PRAYER

The Maker’s Space grew out of our congregation of GEECC in 2013, and is going into our 9th year of meetings of many different people. It is a place where we welcome creativity in our lives and introduce our creative Creator to our friends in our community. It is a safe place where you and your friends will feel welcomed. This year’s sessions will focus on Creative Prayer, using art to have a conversation with God. Having a conversation with a friend requires listening as well as talking, and we will be using art as a tool in the conversation process, especially when there are no words to describe our emotions. We will explore different kinds of prayer using different art mediums.

The October session of The Maker's Space will have a time of creating and listening to what's on your heart and hearing what is on the heart of God. We will explore two kinds of prayer, lament and praise and water based painting with pen and ink mediums. The importance is on the process not necessarily on the end product, although the art continues to speak long after the session is over. Come and explore how the arts can be a way to come out of the busyness of life and to hear purpose and validation of how much the Creator loves you.

Mark your calendars and invite your friends to the following sessions;

Oct. 9 Lament and praise

Nov. 13 Forgiveness and Thanksgiving

Jan. 15 Guest Artist Alison Tisdale Régnier “Paint your Heart Out”

LOOK WHAT GOD IS DOING!-WEEKLY CHURCH MINISTRY UPDATE

We had a wonderful time with our college students this past Sunday (we had 20 students attend the lunch at Pastor Jeff’s house)! It was a great time to get to know them and give them some space outside of their school communities to hang out. We have an amazing opportunity to participate in the spiritual formation and care of young people through our church.

The impact the Lord can make through our church could be far-reaching indeed when you think about the lives that these college students will touch over the span of their lifetime. How wonderful would it be if they remembered our church as a place where they felt a sense of belonging, came to grow in their knowledge and love of God, BUT ALSO developed a life-long habit of being actively involved in the local church? I am so excited our church could be used in this way! God is doing wonderful things through the college and student ministries at GEECC.

Want to be involved? We are always looking for folks to host our college kids or provide some food. Click here to sign up! if you are interested in volunteering.

A LETTER FROM OUR CHILDREN’S MINISTRY TEAM

Good morning Church Family!

As a parent of five young kids, I have been blessed many times over by the people who have volunteered to care for and teach on Sunday mornings. Not only is this a blessing to me and my husband as we can sit in church or serve in other ways, but my kids have formed meaningful relationships with several adults that make them feel part of our church body. They look forward to Sunday school with Mr. Kempe and playing in the preschool room with Mrs. Manning. These adults are part of my kids spiritual formation now and they have made a difference in their lives by sharing the love of Jesus with them. There are so many ways to volunteer in our children’s ministry.

1. Nursery. This is for babies/tots ages 0-2 years old. Volunteers are needed during the church service and during the Sunday school hour. Grab a friend!! Serve with your spouse!! Hold babies!! This volunteer role requires no prep - just show up! I have yet to fill any spots this fall for the Sunday School hour in nursery. If everyone would get a buddy and sign up for ONE SUNDAY in the Sunday school hour, you could let parents go to Sunday school! What a blessing to these tired moms and dads. Click on the google doc below and sign up or email me if there is a Sunday (or two!) you think you would be able serve. If we cannot find volunteers for these spots, the nursery will not be able to open during the Sunday school hour.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1StUEUuYWB90JCVSCzvlFTuvv_a6jreF7-myIoW0SzvU/edit

2. Preschool. This is for kids ages 2-5. This group of kids is a joy to be around on a Sunday morning. They sing, read Bible stories, have a snack, and play! And again, there is no prep for this role! You can just show up and play with kids and bless the young families of our church. Please contact Katie Johnson if this sounds like a place you’d like to serve!

3. Kindergarten-5th grade. Crystal has prayerfully and faithfully led this ministry. We are so thankful for her! But she can’t do it alone. Children’s church happens during the service. Sunday school hour involves large group time and small group time. These kids need people to teach them about the awesome and unbelievable love of Jesus! They need adults to serve during the worship hour this Fall; who care deeply about their hearts and want to listen and develop hearts that take after Jesus. If this is somewhere you’d like to service, please contact Crystal.

Now I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but there are more young families showing up consistently on Sunday mornings. Praise God! Our children’s ministries are full of life and laughter and the goodness of God. Please prayerfully consider if you might be able to serve in any of these areas.

Many blessings,

Jen Casey and the Children’s Ministry Team

LOOK WHAT GOD IS DOING!-WEEKLY CHURCH MINISTRY UPDATE

THIS WEEK IN CHILDREN’S MINISTRIES

Each week in our staff meetings we’ve begun to celebrate some WINS by naming what we see God leading and doing in our ministries.  But we cannot keep this to ourselves and must share these celebrations with you!  In the coming weeks, different ministries will be giving updates on how and what God is doing in His church.  This week our update will cover matters pertaining to the entire church.

This week our Director of Children’s Ministries, Crystal White, reflects on her one year anniversary on staff and her hopes for the future.

September 1, 2022, I’ll be celebrating one year on staff here at this amazing church.

In children’s ministries it has been a year of anticipation, planning and excitement. Meetings, emails, dreaming, visioning and well, dedication. A lot has happened! This summer we’ve been blessed to have new families choose to join our church, giving us the privilege of shepherding their children in the Lord. Our children’s ministry is also growing as we’re welcoming new babies into our church family.

But the great news doesn’t end there.

As we move into the Fall season, kick-off Sunday being right around the corner- including inviting our college-aged brothers and sisters in the faith to join us in our mission to gather, grow and go, children’s ministries has already experienced the hand and heart of God through them. We were in great need of volunteers in our nursery and preschool Sunday School classrooms. This past Sunday our ministry team made this known to the church. By the end of service, we had our scheduled almost completely full. Only needing two spots to be filled.

Our college-aged brothers and sisters along with our faithful congregants stepped right in filling the spots we needed filled. In the words of Rosemary Macdonald, “We’re a church that rallies.” This statement has once again been proven to be true.

God is doing an amazing work in all of us. God is doing an amazing work in our church. His Word promises that we should not get weary in doing good because we will reap a harvest in due season if we faint not (Gal. 6:9). Church, keep serving, keep loving and keep showing up as you have because it’s showing in our children’s ministry.

We love you. We need you. We appreciate you.

Love,

Crystal

NEW! LOOK WHAT GOD IS DOING!-WEEKLY CHURCH MINISTRY UPDATE

THIS WEEK IN CONGREGATIONAL MATTERS

Each week in our staff meetings we’ve begun to celebrate some WINS by naming what we see God leading and doing in our ministries.  But we cannot keep this to ourselves and must share these celebrations with you!  In the coming weeks, different ministries will be giving updates on how and what God is doing in His church.  This week our update will cover matters pertaining to the entire church.

This week our Director of Worship, Leslie Hodgkinson, answers the following questions: What has it been like for you to sit with the first 12 verses of Matthew, chapter 5 – The Beatitudes? What has God been saying, teaching you during these weeks?

For me, planning worship services around one verse, has been a challenge!  Yet with each upcoming Sunday, I have enjoyed the study of the main idea (meek, peacemakers, etc.) and searching for accompanying texts that will speak of who God is, his love for the world, and language for the liturgical acts that aid us in giving verbal/sung expression to God. In all that, do you know what God is doing?  He is forming himself in ME, in ways that I could never have expected – and maybe didn’t want but needed.  Is that happening to you, also?  May God, by his Spirit, continue to prompt our hearts and minds toward transformation in Christ.  May our joining together in worship be the sustaining practice by which we are encouraged and spurred on to finish the race.

Peace,

Leslie

COUNTDOWN TO KICK-OFF SUNDAY!!!

We’re four weeks away from Kick-off Sunday, September 11th! Service starts at 9:30AM.

On Kick-off Sunday we come together as a church to re-launch our Sunday School and other ministry programs after taking a summer break. In this service, we’ll pray for our volunteers, talk about what to expect this coming Fall, and how you can get and stay connected with a group.

Children’s ministry will have their own service at 9:30AM. Parents please check-in your children at the check-in counter and take them directly to their class.

The Bible tells us to race as if we’re trying to obtain a prize. The beautiful truth about being apart of the Body of Christ is that we don’t have to run our race of faith alone.

Join us on Kick-off Sunday to learn how you can connect with other believers as you walk and grow in your faith journey.

An outdoor picnic will follow right after service, 11AM-1:00PM. If it rains, we’ll gather in the FLC.

Please bring a dish according to your last name:

A-M: Bring a side dish

N-Z: Bring a dessert

See you on Kick-off Sunday!

This week our new part-time Admin, Natalie Poke started with us. We’re honored she has chosen to join our staff and congregation in the ministry of this new season God has us in. When you see Natalie please extend a warm welcome to her.

I was born and raised in Wheaton and am a dedicated Chicago Cubs fan. I am a recent graduate from Taylor University, with a B.A. in Biblical Literature, minoring in Christian Ministries. I have two loving parents and an older brother, who have guided me in my earthly ministry. Throughout my life, God has made himself known through various seasons and trails, reminding me that He is constant and near to those who seek him. When I am not in the field of ministry, I enjoy spending time with my friends, reading novels by author Sadie Robertson, or listening to genres of music.

Missions are very important to our lives as believers. Naperville Last Fling-Labor Day Weekend (Sept. 2 - 5)

The Naperville Last Fling, during Labor Day Weekend, is a festival that’ll feature live music, a carnival, family friendly activities, and the Labor Day Parade. Involvement of volunteers allows the Naperville Jaycees (event hosts) to donate money raised to local charitable organizations, including DuPagePads. If volunteering, register on behalf of DuPagePads to allow the organization to receive a donation. Event information and registration are here.

Below are two opportunities to serve with local GE COV ministry partners:

DuPagePads Annual Walk 4 Home

Join other supporters Saturday, Sept. 17 in a 2-mile walk around scenic College of DuPage. Registration is free; tiered fundraising levels with prizes are available. Following the walk is the College Chaparral Family Day with a Bounce house, food, music, face painting and more, and its football kickoff. Find out more.

World Relief Chicagoland Childcare Need

This partner reached out to us for help in finding volunteer(s) to help with caring for children 2 to 6 years of age for an hour on Saturdays while their mothers attend Arabic Speaking Women’s Enrichment Group. Facilitated by a World Relief Chicagoland staff member, the group meets in the Glen Ellyn area through October. Contact Darren Miller.

DuPagePads

A large network of volunteers is required for the mission to end homelessness in DuPage County. There are volunteer opportunities in the Interim (Overnight) and Emergency Housing at the Client Service Center, Career/Employment Solutions Program, and at Special Events. “Oh friends, God is moving! We’re making some amazing strides in children’s ministry.

We’ve introduced foundational aspects of being involved in the body of Christ. One way we’re implementing Godly principles into our kid’s worship experience is by teaching them to tithe. We’re now collecting offering in kid’s church. Our goal is to plant a seed of giving in the hearts of our kids so they’ll understand and exercise our privilege and duty to support God’s house. We’re hoping this teaching will follow them into adulthood and they’ll jump right into their God-given place in the Church and shine!

Since we’ve started this, we’ve seen an increase in tithing in our children’s ministry. More importantly we see a cheerfulness, the Bible tells us God loves, when the children give. It’s so exciting to see kids come in with their change or dollar bill, some in sandwich bags, asking when offering time is:>

Thank you parents for supporting us in our effort to build the foundation of cheerful giving in your kids.

You’ll see more of our kiddos involved in ministry in other ways. If you have any ideas for ways we can get our elementary kids serving in ministry such as cleaning the sanctuary after service or greeting please let me know.”

Love,

Crystal

CHECK OUT OUR COMMUNITY BOARD FOR NEW NEWS

Hanging on the wall in the lower atrium next to the elevator our community board displays information shared with us from our community members. New jobs postings from local agencies such as Outreach Community Ministries and the local school district looking for school bus drivers have been posted. There is also an opportunity for home schooled kids to be involved in a local school band.

Take a look at our community board for more details regarding these exciting opportunities.

THE WORK OF THE PEOPLE

When we gather for communal/corporate worship on Sunday mornings, we are given an order of worship that guides our participation in conversation with God. This order that contains prayer, scripture, song, silence, and communion is called ‘the liturgy’. Translated, the word liturgy means the work of the people. For most of us who work Monday – Friday, the thought of having to work in worship on a Sunday seems uninviting! However, worship liturgy calls us into full participation, into engagement, action, and response to God and his people. It’s an encouraging, restoring, and re-membering work.

This communal worship work is at it’s best when it is led by members of the community – the church. You are needed! You are needed to show up in the summer when you’re around. You are needed to help set up/clean up and serve communion. You are needed to read scripture. You are needed to usher/greet others as they come to our worship space. You are needed to serve coffee after worship as an extension of the hospitality that Christ just gave us in worship at his Table. You are needed to learn how to operate projection, streaming, and sound during worship. You are needed to love and care for children during worship.

You are needed because we function at our best as Christ followers when we do it together!

If you have any questions about how you can help out on a Sunday morning, contact any staff member.

We love you and need you,

The Staff

The Staff

South alcove gallery

Our own exhibit of MY SECRET DOUBLE is now on display in our sanctuary.  It compliments the traveling exhibit at Wheaton College but is done by our own artists from our congregation.  Come meditate on the reflections of our inner voices that no one sees but God.
