A Special Need; a Special Offering

Many of you know and love Tarcisio Magurupira, a brother in Christ, member of our church, and our supported missionary in Zimbabwe.  We have so often rejoiced in the work God has done at the Theological College in Zimbabwe and through the children’s camps.  Pastors are being equipped, children are hearing of Jesus for the first time, and hearts are being changed.

Tarcisio has been battling a health challenge in recent months, including a serious infection, and now surgery is unavoidable.  Unfortunately the surgery he needs is not available in Zimbabwe; Tarcisio must travel to South Africa for the surgery.  His medical insurance is sorely lacking.  Tarcisio does not have sufficient financial resources.

The need is $10,000.  Will you please come along side Tarcisio and consider a donation to help offset medical expenses?  If you are so led, simply make your check out to Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church as you usually do, but also note “Emergency Medical Fund” in the memo line (and on the envelope if you use one).  If your give online, the dropdown menu now includes “Emergency Medical Fund for Tarcisio”.

Here is a link to the giving page  Give to Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church (breezechms.com)   And whether you are led to donate or not, please PRAY.  Our God is the Great Physician.  He holds Tarcisio and each of us in the palm of his hand.  Thank you for your consideration.

Project Update from Tarcisio
Last month we received a very impressive update from Tarcisio, our missions partner in Zimbabwe. He reported that: “… the church roof project ended up being a great testimony.”

He said the hailstorm that severely damaged the church roof led one of the church’s elders to enroll in the Evangelical Theological College of Zimbabwe’s one-year Bible College program to become a pastor.

His graduation with a certificate of pastoral ministry, along with the financial support that we provided via our Missions Special Opportunity Fund to repair the church’s severely damaged roof, and the additional support of The Evangelical Alliance Mission, inspired the building of a new sanctuary.

Tarcisio said the new center, which is nearing completion, was one of the places with the highest number of children in camp last August. He expressed his gratitude for our prayers and project support.

Tarcisio has an M.A. in Systematic Theology from Wheaton College and is an academic dean of the Evangelical Theological College of Zimbabwe. Read more about him and his ministry—Firm Foundation—here.

Julius and Makers of Disciple Makers Ministry
It was wonderful to be with our missions partner Julius Coomson and Ivanna this past Sunday, to hear his sermon and to hear from both of them about their family and the extensive reach and amazing impact of the Makers of Disciple Makers ministry in Ghana. Those not able to be present to hear Julius’ sermon may access it here. If you would like to receive the ministry newsletter and have not already expressed that interest, let Darren Miller know via missions@gecovenant.org.  Those who may want to reach out to Julius directly can get his contact information from Scott Macdonald – samacdonald2022@gmail.com.

Glen Ellyn Food Pantry in New Location
Earlier this month the Food Pantry relocated to its new site at 55 N. Park Blvd. in Glen Ellyn. The new headquarters is the former parsonage of Faith Lutheran Church, which was completely transformed into a larger, dedicated food pantry and warehouse. The new building will support the growing number of people in DuPage County who rely on the Food Pantry for groceries and services. Until the shelves are stocked in the new location, services will be limited to outside only. Watch for updates and learn more here

Holy croutons!

Some of you may have picked up croutons that I called “Holy Croutons”. These croutons are made from leftover communion bread. Because the bread has been blessed, we don’t just throw away what is leftover, but we either return them to the earth by feeding them to ducks or other wild animals; OR, we can reconstitute the bread into CROUTONS!

Holy Croutons!

We are looking for people to help with the SET Up and CLEAN UP of weekly Communion.

OR perhaps you would like to provide bread for a Sunday.

Would you consider joining part of the group that prepares the sacred meal of our Lord that we share together in each Sunday’s worship service? We will teach you how to be involved in this wonderful ministry of Communion.

Special Guest This Sunday
We are looking forward to a visit this Sunday from Julius Coomson, who leads a ministry called “Makers of Disciple Makers.” The Ministry is a discipleship training program for students at the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, as well as evangelistic outreach programs for high school students. Julius also serves as a Pastor and Preacher at Legon Interdenominational Church.

He worshipped with us here at Glen Ellyn Covenant Church and graced us with his preaching while he was studying at Wheaton College Graduate School several years ago. Our church has supported his ministry ever since. Julius will preach on Sunday, and then share an update on his ministry from 11:00-11:45. Refreshments will be available.

Please take this opportunity to meet Julius and learn about his ministry!

MEET JOSEPH SAWYER, OUR NEW DIRECTOR OF STUDENT MINISTRY!

Hey Y’all! My name is Joseph, and I am from Holland, MI. I love grilling out, Chicago sports, playing catch with the frisbee, and Billy Joel.

I grew up going to the local church Youth Group and participating in Young Life. I attended a gap year program post-High School, and that was when I knew I wanted to follow Jesus. After College, I hit the workforce doing a wide variety of jobs. Summers were spent working at a camp called HoneyRock, where I could build relationships, spend time with others, and talk about the Gospel. It was during that time that I knew I wanted to live a life of ministry.

This past year, I went back to the gap year I attended at HoneyRock to work with eighteen High School graduates as a Program Coordinator for Wheaton College.

I am super excited to join Glen Ellyn Covenant Church and be a part of this incredible community!

Welcoming Rev. Dr. Tuisem Shishak and Zingrin Shishak This Sunday
We are looking forward to hearing from Rev. Dr. Tuisem (“Tui”) Shishak and his son Zingrin Shishak, both affiliated with Patkai Christian College in Nagaland, India, this coming Sunday, July 2.

Rev. Dr. Shishak founded Patkai Christian College in Nagaland in 1974. Since then, the school has trained more than 7,000 Christian leaders and has become one of the top colleges in India. The Lord has worked powerfully through this ministry. Our church supported Tui for many years until he retired a few years ago. Many of us have enjoyed praying for his family and work.

Longtime Glen Ellyn Covenanters may remember that Tui’s late wife, Margaret, served as our church musician for some time and helped launch Patkai’s School of Music. Zingrin studied at Wheaton College, received a graduate degree in piano pedagogy, and currently serves as Dean of the School of Music at Patkai.

Tui and Zingrin will share an update during worship this Sunday. Please take time to greet them afterwards during coffee time in Higher Grounds. The Missions Committee plans to host a lunch for them Sunday afternoon. If you would like to join us to learn more about their ministry, please contact missions@gecovenant.org or Darren Miller.
